A recognizable logo is an integral part of any successful company. When we see a bitten apple, golden arches of the letter “M”, wings of Nike or three Adidas stripes – our brain instantly associates these “badges” with companies. The Android logo was not always the way we used to see it, and we’ll tell you about its origin.
Before the release of Google’s mobile operating system, the word “android” was associated with a robot that has human appearance. Therefore, the Google Android logo is a friendly green robot and it’s not just that. Friendliness and openness are the basic principles of the platform, which was developed as a universal standard for developers and manufacturers of mobile devices.
Does he have a name
The green robot has no official name. For some time he was called Andy (Andy) – it could be a reference to the creator of the operating system Andy Rubin, but this statement may turn out to be just a myth. The operating system development team called the logo – Bugdroid, but it is more like a nickname.
Virus and HYIP
After its appearance, the green robot very quickly won the love of users, after which it began to appear in various guises. He was a ninja, a pirate and even a cat. On one of the most famous Android art bites off the Apple logo. Google did not register the ownership of the logo and did not put forward design requirements, so it scattered in various forms around the world. Seeing the huge popularity of his talisman, Google decided to launch Androidify is a service that allows any users to make an Android logo with their design
Who came up with a green robot
Before being presented to users in its usual form, Bugdroid experienced several transformations. The head of the developer relations department had to present the operating system logo for internal launch. He had no concrete ideas and at the very last minute he drew several robots in the vector editor Inkscape. So the first version of the logo came into being – Dandroid.
Looks, to put it mildly, not very.
“Dandroids” experienced the peak of their popularity inside the Google office among developers. They were the talismans of Android until the moment when Irina Block presented her design for a robot that became the face of the operating system.
Irina managed to create one of the most recognizable logos, but this did not bring her popularity. She recalls a case from a movie theater, where an advertisement with the Android logo began before the film was shown, her six-year-old daughter stood up and shouted: “This is my mother who invented it!” The entire front row turned to look at them, Irina said that she was very confused at that moment.
Irina Blok worked as a designer at Google. For her team received the task to invent and create a recognizable logo with a robot. Before her first layouts, she drew inspiration from the design of toys and science fiction films. After which she drew a robot with a torso in the shape of a tin can and antennas on the head.
While working with colleagues on the Android logo, they came up with an open source design concept.
We decided that it would be an “open” logo that anyone can modify to fit. It seemed to us a rather bold decision.
Most companies protect their intellectual property and trademark from imitators. The Android logo will remain free.
The green robot is more than 10 years old and it continues to maintain recognition and succeed in this business. Each new version of the operating system is accompanied by a corresponding “robot”, and on Google campus there is a lawn with statues dedicated to different versions of Android.
